Welcome to the 2-day Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 course (AST1). The outline of this program is one day of classroom theory followed by one field day. The classroom session is on January 16th and the field session on January 23rd.
Objectives: At the end of the course, students should be able to:
• Understand the basics of avalanche formation and release.
• Identify avalanche terrain.
• Know the steps required to plan and carry out a trip.
• Use the Avaluator™ as a decision-making tool in areas where trips are rated using the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) and where Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins are available.
• Find resources for obtaining ATES terrain ratings if their trip is not rated.
• Find resources for obtaining Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins if these are not available.
• Use appropriate travel techniques in avalanche terrain.
• Carry out a companion rescue.
• Understand the limits of their training.
The cost of this course is $105. This course is being subsidized by the Training & Leadership Committee and is not eligible for further subsidy. Registration will only be confirmed once payment is received. Cheques are payable to the ACC Calgary Section and can be mailed to 426 Tuscany Ridge Hts NW T3L 3B6. Once payment is received participants will be moved from the wait list to the course.
Participants are responsible for providing their own beacon, shovel, and probe on the field day. FREE rentals are available from MEC for AST1 courses - book early to ensure availability.
Participants will be required to travel on alpine touring, split snowboard, telemark gear or snowshoes on the field day. Please email with any questions you may have.
Required Items to Bring:
FIELD DAY: Beacon, Shovel, Probe, Skis, Skins, Boots, Poles, Water, Lunch, Snacks, Warm Clothes and any additional clothing you like to have. NO CROSS COUNTRY GEAR.

Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.

Waiver and Membership Requirement
Participation in this activity is subject to you having a current membership and a current signed

membership renews prior to the activity taking place, you will be required to agree to a new Waiver upon renewal, this new Waiver will apply to your participation in this activity. By proceeding with the booking, you agree to the foregoing waiver terms. Bookings
without a current Waiver at the time of the activity will be cancelled.
