AMP Ski Progression

So you have done BITS or AST 1 for skiers/splitboarders and are now wondering what’s next, or you are thinking you want to become a Calgary Section Trip Leader but are not feeling entirely ready. The Calgary Section AMP (Alpine Mentorship Program) Ski Progression is probably right for you!

This program is designed for a group of skiers/splitboarders who want to meet regularly throughout the ski season: November through to April (possible add on in May, if conditions permit), with a steady progression of skills and gaining experience required to lead groups of skiers/splitboarders in the backcountry.

AMP Ski Progression Day 2 will cover crevasse rescue techniques. By taking this course in the early in the season it will provide ample time to practice the skills on your own and with other participants throughout the season. This will allow further development of the skills and techniques later in the progression.

Aim
Learn the fundamentals of group crevasse rescue, including rope systems, communication, and rescue techniques. Build essential skills to respond safely and efficiently in glacier travel emergencies.

Objectives:develop confidence with packaging and tying into the rope for glacier travel
  • Arresting a fall while roped up
  • Performing a tractor pull
  • Performing a direct haul crevasse rescue
  • Performing a drop loop 6:1 crevasse rescue
  • Transferring a load
  • Understanding self rescue techniques
  • Understanding of unroped crevasse rescue
  • Confidence with crevasse rescue systems
  • Confident with building anchors and rope systems
This course will consist of ground school in the morning with everyone moving to a training venue in the afternoon to practice with live loads over an edge. The entire day will be spent outside so please dress appropriately for the weather.

AMP Ski Progression groups will be lead by Jeff McKeough, an ACMG Apprentice Ski Guide and Apprentice Rock Guide.  Jeff has been a past ski and rock trip leader for the ACC Calgary Section
