Itinerary:

The instructor for this skills series is ACMG guide Brent Peters who has assisted the Calgary Section in the development of the Alpine Mentorship Program (AMP).  Participants will be instructed and coached to learn and develop their skills, in order for members to be active participants in, and potentially lead, safe and successful trips.


We will be learning and practicing the following skills:

>>> Review map features including contour lines, declination, grid lines, scale, terrain.

>>> Understand Universal Transverse Mercator Grid Reference System

>>> Understand magnetic and grid north and apply declination

>>> Develop a white out navigation plan including leg, bearing, grid

>>> reference, distance, elevation, notes, hazards, and time

>>> Execute white out navigation plan

>>> Approach shoes

>>> Outdoor clothing appropriate to the weather forecast

>>> Compass with mirror and declination adjustment recommend Silva Compass Expedition (available for $100)

>>> Notebook: recommend No.311FX or No.OR71FX (available for $15)

>>> Pencil: recommend No.YE13 (available for $20)

HAZARDS:

Rockfall

Rockfall can be caused by natural forces or by people travelling through the terrain (e.g. climbing/scrambling/hiking)


Communication and Rescue

Communication can be difficult and in the event of an accident, rescue and treatment may not be available| Adverse weather may also delay the arrival of treatment and transport out of the field 

If an Injury occurs in challenging terrain movement to an evacuation point may be slow|


Terrain

Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
