How many times have you driven from Calgary to Canmore and noticed this beautiful South East Ridge on Grotto Mountain ?
Have you ever wondered if it's climbable ?
According to the "Rockies Central" book (page 57)... it should be.
The lack of beta online seems to indicate it's not popular or has not been climbed recently.
It's supposed to be mostly class 4th with a few rock pitches up to 5.7...
I expect this grade to be "old school" and probably closer to 5.8/5.9.
But there is a big part of unknown so let's go for some exploration and see how it goes.
- The trip leader will bring ropes/trad gear/pitons/radios
- All the participants must have a harness, rock climbing shoes, helmet, a belay device, whatever it takes to rappel and some slings and carabiners
- We won't be able to protect most of the scramble sections so all the participants MUST have good scrambling/climbing skills as well as a good tolerance to exposure.
- In order for the trip to go, we'll need at least climber with trad experience (in addition to the trip leader).
The last spot is open to accommodate a less experienced climber.
Whatever experience they have, all climbers must be able to climb 5.9.
More details will be given to selected participants.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
Trip Feedback If you have any feedback, positive or negative, concerning this trip or any other, we want to hear from you! You can send any feedback you may have to the Section Chair.
