Itinerary:

Weather is looking great for a weekend adventure!  The plan for this trip is roughly as follows:

Sat Morning: Leave Calgary and drive to the David Thompson, 3h drive

Sat Afternoon: Find camp, go single pitch sport climbing at the Whirlpool Ridge Crag (grades 5.6 to 5.10d)

Sun Morning: Wake up early and scramble Whirlpool Ridge (14 km return, 1500 m gain)

Sun Afternoon: Drive back to Calgary, 3h drive.  Expect to be home ~6-8 PM.

Climbing:  You should have some prior climbing experience, climbing gear (listed below) and should be able to top-rope routes in the 5.6 to 5.8 range (at least).  You don't need to lead anything if you don't want to.  Knowing how to lead belay and how to clean sport routes safely and efficiently would be an asset.

Scrambling:  It's a big mountain - be prepared.  This is a moderate scramble with considerable elevation gain.  I saw a report from early May online that showed the scramble route was mostly dry, so by now I expect the whole mountain is probably bone dry.

Camping:  We have an option to either pay $28 for a site at the Thompson Creek Campground (get picnic table, flat spot, biffy) or we can find a spot on Crown land beside the river for free (zero facilities, no toilet).  We can decide as a group what we want to do.  I will bring my 6 person tent, stove & cooler.  Bring your own dinner.

Required Items to Bring:

Climbing gear: Helmet, harness, belay device, personal climbing kit

Scrambling gear:  Helmet, day pack with plenty of water & snacks.

Camping gear: sleeping pad, sleeping bag, dinner for yourself

Recommended Items to Bring:

Lots of snacks, water, a camera, sunscreen, bug spray, anything else to keep you cozy at camp.
