Ice Rescue Course
This two day course goes right through from basics to some more complex scenarios. Participants need to be very well versed in anchor building, belaying and rappelling on ice as these skills will be assumed. Previous training in rock or crevasse rescue will be a definite asset but not absolutely required. All participants should be very comfortable on WI3 (preferably able to lead this grade) to get the most out of this course.
The course will take place in David Thompson country away from the Bow Valley crowds where we can focus on single pitch and multi-pitch rescue problems. The first day will take place near Nordegg and the second day will take place on a multi-pitch climb in David Thompson country (conditions will dictate). The first day will focus on a review of tie-offs, raising and lowering skills for both a lead and second fall. The second day will be an all day rescue scenario on a multi-pitch ice climb using the skills learned on the first day and more.
The course will be taught by Cyril Shokoples, an internationally certified mountain guide and owner of “Rescue Dynamics”. Cyril has a long history with the ACC, particularly teaching the flagship TNF Leadership courses. He also regularly trains Canadian military SARTECHs and Canadian Parks Service Wardens, among many others, and has received Distinguished Service Awards from both the ACC and the ACMG.
In an effort to assist in the training and development of existing or future trip leaders,
the ACC Calgary Section has chosen to subsidize 50% of the cost of this course. The first 6 cheques ($140) from qualified applicants will be accepted. Upon completion of the course,$70 will be refunded.Accomodations are extra. No refunds/withdrawals unless space is filled by someone on the wait list.
