This is the first in what will hopefully be a series of ski traverses. One of the
objectives of this trip is to provide people an opportunity to gain/strengthen experience
traversing in the winter with moving camps. We will need to get wilderness
passes from parks and once we have that settled (or alternatives explored) there
will be a mandatory pre-trip session to discuss the route, required and
optional equipment, winter camping on the icefield and logistics.
This is experiential, not instructional (not a course or guide-led event), with
the intention of providing participants a chance to gain/strengthen skills and
knowledge while actively contributing to the group’s success.
The plan is to go the full N-S length of the icefield, starting at Peyto
Lake and exiting at Sherbrooke Lake. If the group and conditions/weather allow,
there are options to do side trips for skiing (e.g. Habel, Gordon, Diablaret).
Attaining summits along the way will not be a priority. The Bath Glacier exit
is an option, but by default the Scheisser/Lomas exit will be used. We will need
at least two vehicles. The timeline will be to gather in Lake Louise (car
pooling TBD) at 6 AM on Saturday, leave a vehicle(s) at West Louise Lodge / Sherbrooke
Lake, head up to Peyto Lake and get moving for a full day of travel. We will
then either travel directly from one camp to the next, park overnight gear and go
for a ski along the way or spend extra time at a camp and ski in the vicinity.
I will look to assemble a group of suitable, compatible, complementary
participants from the waiting list. You must have crevasse rescue training and the fitness/strength/ability to cover
daily distances, elevation and downhill sections while carrying a substantial
overnight pack. The trip is suitable for split boarders who have all the above and strong
split skiing abilities. I'm happy to discuss any of this if you have questions.
Sound like fun? Ask any questions you might have, add yourself to the list,
send me a summary of your related experience, training, skills and tell me why
this trip would be a good fit for you and the overall success of the group.
Required Items to Bring:
To be discussed at the pre-trip meeting. In addition to usual ski/split touring equipment, ski crampons will be mandatory.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
Trip Feedback If you have any feedback, positive or negative, concerning this trip or any other, we want to hear from you! You can send any feedback you may have to the Section Chair.
