Itinerary: |
Dates: Sunday March 7 2021, 8.00 AM-5.00pm
Cost: $136.25 (this includes tax) for one day
of instruction in the field for each participant (participant 1=Youth, participant 2=Guardian)
Course Content:
This one-day course is for parents and their kids who want to further develop their backcountry touring skills. They will have already taken the Youth and Family Intro to Backcountry Skiing/ Snowboarding from December, or already have some experience with avalanche rescue and backcountry touring.
This is the second of 3 courses that will build on each other throughout the winter.
On this course we will cover avalanche transceiver checks, more companion rescue practice skills (you can never do enough!), trail breaking, track setting, uphill turns, snowpack analysis, avalanche terrain recognition/avoidance and downhill techniques (plan A: powder skiing).
Come and educate yourselves so that you enjoy our beautiful backcountry and feel confident in your decisions. Perfect for kids and their parents so both parties are know how to make good decisions in the backcountry and slackcountry!
This course will be lead by Erica Roles, a fully certified ACMG guide and the mother of a young girl.
This course will be followed by a possible Bow Hut (Wapta trip) at the end of March where we will learn safe glacier travel techniques and a Mount Hector ascent in April where glacier travel skills will also be covered.

- Basic avalanche rescue skills and experience with the touring equipment.
- Some downhill skiing/ snowboarding experience (blue runs at the resort a minimum).
This course is designed for youth 12-18 with a guardian.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance: Please review our participant responsibility guidelines!
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
