Course Content:
This one-day course is designed for parents and their kids who are interested in experiencing the fun and aesthetic sport of ice climbing. This course is for those who want to build on their overall mountain skills and also those who want to learn a new sport that requires team work, precision, technique and the ability to trust yourself and others. There is no other sport quite like it!.

This is the first of 2 courses that will build on each other throughout the winter. The opportunity to go multi-pitch ice climbing together later in the season will also exist.

This introductory course will teach you how to use the equipment, the hazards associated with ice climbing and ice climbing technique.

Take advantage of our outdoor playground! This course is perfect for kids/teenagers and their parents who want to learn a new mountain activity together in The Canadian Rockies - a destination for ice climbers worldwide.

This course will be lead by Erica Roles, a fully certified ACMG guide and the mother of a young girl.

Prerequisite:

- No previous ice climbing experience is necessary.
- However, previous experience indoor or outdoor rock climbing and the ability to Top-Rope belay is beneficial.

This course is designed for youth 12-18 with a guardian.
Required Items to Bring:
- Participants should have their own harness, helmet, belay device, winter ice climbing boots (rigid sole) and crampons.
- One pair of ice tools per family is sufficient
- All these items are available to rent from U of C, GearUp in Canmore or MEC.

Also:
- 2 pairs gloves each
- Appropriate clothing for both moving and standing around in the winter (pants that are not too baggy) and a backpack to carry everything for the day (clothes, equipment, food/water/ thermos) - min 30L.
