COVID 19 Info: Please protect yourself and others. On single day trips please practice social distancing. Masks are recommended when within 2m of non-cohort participants. On multiday trips you are considered to be in a cohort with the other participants and specific safety measures are the discretion of the trip coordinator. Note: If this is an 18+ event, you may have trouble registering if your Date of Birth isn't entered. To update your DOB, please log on and go to Account -> Edit Account and update the "Date of Birth" field.
Start at ACC Clubhouse,Canmore, AB then out into the snow.
Costs: $89.00 (this includes tax) for one day
Course Content: Learn how to find your way! No need to follow your GPS or your friend, they're just pretending they know where they are going anyway! Join us outside for a day of navigation.
By the end of the day you'll be able to find north without a compass (or GPS), match the terrain around you to the map, use a compass to orient the map to north, and take a compass bearing from the map or from the world around you! Phew, that is a lot to cover, but are we ever going to have fun!
Topics to be covered include:
Map Reading (legend, scale, grid reference, map symbols, map interpretation)
Determining a grid reference or UTM
How to plan out a route
Identifying map features in the field
How to take a compass bearing
Orientating yourself on the map.

Compass with adjustable declination
Here are two links to suggested options (option
Gloves, Hat, Warm Puffy Jacket, Long pants,
variable weather, Hiking Boots, 1L of water,
warm. The focus of the course will be on brain
power and not
physical endurance. We will be stepping over
travelling through thick bush.

It is a first paid - first on the course registration. The course fee is
$89.00 which includes taxes.

The Calgary Section of the Alpine Club of Canada is a not for profit / flow through course and trip provider. We organize courses and trips based on member demand and divide any costs that we incur between event attendees. In other words, we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
