This course is being offered in partnership with Yamnuska Mountain Adventures.

In todays high tech world planning safe and efficient back country routes using a variety of digital topographic maps and electronic devices can be mind boggling. Whether you are a seasoned mountaineering or first timer looking to explore the back country, this 1 day Digital Navigation course will walk you through a variety of online resources and teach you the fundamental tools for both trip planning and use while out in the back country.

Whether you have cell service or not, we’ll show you how to use your smartphone to plan, navigate and track your routes, while conserving battery life. The course will have a classroom element in the morning followed by a practical session in the field in the afternoon.

Goals and Objectives:
- Basic functions of GPS (smartphones) and how they work
- Limitations of the technology
- App settings
- Map Layers
- Route Planning using Gaia & Google Earth
- Setting waypoints and creating a track on the smartphone.
- How to find your location
- Follow a route
- Tracking a route
- What to do when the GPS doesn’t work

12:00 pm head to the field

- Use of the GPS in the field
- Locating your position
- Reading the map information on the smartphone and confirming your position
- Navigation course
- Following a track
- Tracking a route

Cost for the course is $109.75.

1 - Register through the normal process. Once you sign up, there is no cancellation offering, you are committed but can transfer your registration if need be
2 - Send an-etransfer payment to the Treasurer at treasurer@acccalgary.ca

3 - When you send your payment, include the following information: name, full address, including postal code, phone number, email, course title and date, Trip Leader/Coordinator, and the password to accept the payment.

Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
