Thee best place for early season deep fluffy snow!
Slowpokes?
Well, there's always someone faster than you on the up-track, likely just not us (≈250 v-m/h)!
If you have wanted to explore Rogers Pass terrain but were concerned with holding up faster groups, this trip is for you. Or if just want to get up there and you can enjoy a gentle paced up-track, come join in!
Depending upon our party's desire and skill set and of course upon conditions, we MAY be able to:
- break into a faster and a slower group.
- get onto the Asulkan Glacier and perhaps visit Young's Peak.
Staging from Wheeler Hut on Saturday morning gives a nice head start for skinning up to Asulkan Hut (about 7 km, 960 v-m). Plenty of time for some turns up top on the Saturday, too.
Wheeler Hut is booked for a party of 10 for the Friday night (Dec 6), and the entire Asulkan Hut (capacity of 10) is booked for the Saturday night (Dec 7).
After work Friday, leave Calgary to make the 4 hour drive to the Asulkan Parking Lot, then make the short skin in to arrive at the Wheeler Hut (about 1 km from the parking lot, skinning along the old abandoned railroad line). Arrive before about midnight Friday (being mindful not to wake up any sleeping folk, of course) and all should be good. Someone will arrive earlier to ensure that the Wheeler Hut wood stoves are stoked for your arrival.
We will plan further details as a group as the time approaches. Safety first. In the meantime, any questions, comments or suggestions are most welcome.
If you are interested please sign up and email to the trip coordinator a brief description of your experience level, including safety training (AST-1, AST-2, first aid, etc), glacier travel training and experience (if any), some of your recent bigger trips and your familiarity (if any) with Rogers Pass terrain. AST-1 training is a MINIMUM requirement and AST-2 is preferred, etc. ... Thank you!
Cost is $75 for the two nights at the huts including wilderness pass.
Payment can be made with the PayPal button below.
Required Items to Bring:
The usual ski/split-board gear, safety gear
(beacon, probe, shovel), hut gear including
sleeping bags, etc (sleeping pads are provided
in the huts as are propane cooking and utensils
and plates and all, and wood heat (Wheeler hut)
or propane heat (Asulkan hut)), and ample food
(we may plan a group dinner for Saturday night).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Planning is in the early stages but consider
possibility of travel on the Asulkan glacier to
Young's Peak, depending upon early season
conditions. We certainly don't need to, but its
nice to keep it open as an option. We can work
this out as a group, depending upon the party's
desire and skill level, and, of course,
prevailing conditions.

There are no refunds, so if you must cancel
perhaps we can find a replacement (easy to do if
we are fortunate enough to have folk on the wait
list).
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
Trip Feedback If you have any feedback, positive or negative, concerning this trip or any other, we want to hear from you! You can send any feedback you may have to the Section Chair.
