Itinerary:
Asulkan Hut Trip - AMP Level 2

Date: Friday January 18, 2018 – Sunday January 20, 2018

Cost: $479 (The cost of the trip includes hut booking fees and 3 days of mentoring by a guide)

This mentorship event is part of the AMP (Alpine Mentorship) program organized by the ACC Calgary Alpine Chair jointly with ACMG Guide Brent Peters. Brent will be the guide for this event. This course is designed for intermediate backcountry skiers that want to be challenged and improve their skills navigating the more complex terrain of Rogers pass with the help of a guide.

Timeline:

Friday, January 18 – 7am - Drive from Calgary to the Asulkan valley trailhead. Skin to the hut, drop the heavy stuff, ski some powder and navigate in more complex terrain with a supervision of a guide. Dinner, day’s assessment and planning for the next day.

Saturday January 19 – Spend the day skiing. Possible objectives: 7 Steps of Paradise, Lily Glacier, Dome Bowl, Forever Young Couloir or something else in the area. Glacier travel might be encountered.

Sunday, January 20 – Ski in the AM (Triangle Moraine?), then grab our stuff and ski to the trailhead. Back in Calgary by 7pm

Description:

The Asulkan region is one of the best zones in Rogers pass. High alpine objectives, excellent glacier skiing and lots of powder. Maybe you have never been to Asulkan and want some local knowledge or you have been in the region and are intimidated by the terrain or maybe you want to ski some big lines with other intermediate skiers.

Participants are expected to be fit so we can move efficiently and ski lots. The Alpine Mentorship Program gives participants the opportunity to learn by taking turns leading the group with ACMG guide Brent Peters challenging your decision process. Come prepared by reviewing the avalanche bulletin, create a white out navigation plan and have a list of possible objectives you want to ski. The course will cover terrain management, snow assessment, hazard evaluation, route selection and group management.

Evenings will be spent having some drinks, reviewing what was learnt during the day and reviewing possible objectives for the next day. Accelerate your learning and ski some big objectives in this custom course.

Please note this is a self-catered event but catering is available by PeakEats at an additional cost.

Prerequisites: AST 1, Crevasse Rescue Training, intermediate level of fitness allowing you to move swiftly through mountain terrain, ability to carry a 30 pound pack for 3 days with 1200m+ elevation gain per day, ability to confidently ski in the backcountry in all weather conditions under the supervision of a guide.
