Most of my climbing is weather rather than work dependent,
which means I try to go climbing when we have a forecast of
sun; this schedule does not usually coincide with weekends.
Such is the case for the following trip proposal, which I know is
inconvenient for those of you chained to desks and the like.
However, just in case you can lose those chains (‘climbers unite,
you have only & etc.’) and prep for a three-day trip tomorrow,
you might want to consider the following:
Mardy and I are going to head down to Waterton to climb Mt.
Bauerman and Lone Mt., both of which are near the Twin Lakes
campground, where we will stay. Neither is huge, nor difficult.
This excursion will require a mountain bike to ride up Bauerman
Creek (about 9 km); a backpack with overnight gear and food for
three days (and the willingness to haul it another 3 km to the
campground); capacity to endure modest bushwhacking on each
peak; ability to hump 2000’+ on two adjacent days. And a
temperament that enjoys quiet lakes, superb scenery, and good
company.
We’ll leave Calgary about 8:30am on Thursday, July 9, arrive at
Waterton about 11:30, take an hour to get camping permits,
drive to Red Rock Canyon, and get the bicycles limbered up;
then two hrs to the drop-off point for the bicycles (maybe bring
a lock), and another hour to get to the lakes. If perchance there
is time on Thursday, we may try to climb Bauerman (about 3.5
hrs RT, if we’re lucky). The next day we climb Lone, and on
Saturday we head out . . . if there is interest, we’ll take a side
trip up to Goat Lake, which is a very pretty little tarn. If we have
not already climbed Bauerman, we will do that on Saturday
morning.
Depending on the level of subscription for this trip, you might –
or might not -- need to drive your own car, as well.
If you’re interested, give me a call at 246-8246 or write
collierr@telus.net (I will only be looking at e-mail Wednesday
morning, however).
Cheers,
rick
