*This trip is open to ALL skill levels, but
don't plan on getting much sleep.*
As the waking, snow-less nightmare known as
summer comes to a close, we can begin to soothe
our tortured souls with thoughts of the return
of sweet, sweet pow.
The Early Season Elk Lakes Fiasco (formerly
known as the Family Less-Friendly Elk Lakes
Trip) is part training and part religious
ceremony. We train by carrying huge packs of
food and booze, and we celebrate the blessed
return of fluffy white snow.
The basic plan is to haul an obscene amount of
food and beverages out to the hut and then ski,
hike, ice-climb, whatever, all weekend during
the daylight hours and spend the evenings
eating a ridiculous amount of food and keeping
hydrated.
On Friday night, we'll meet at the carpool and
then drive out to the Elk Lakes Trailhead.
We'll then ski-tour into the hut by headlamp,
getting there some time after midnight and
we'll then party until the wee small hours of
the morning. On Saturday, people tackle
whatever objective works with their energy
level, and the always unpredictable early-
season weather. Sometimes skiing is in,
sometimes ice, sometimes we go for a hike.
Saturday night we'll have a huge potluck
dinner, drink a ton of delicious beverages, and
basically just train our Apres-Ski-ability.
Sunday morning people tend to take easy by
cooking bacon and then dragging themselves back
to the cars.
Cost is about $55 plus gas money to your
driver. Instructions on sending payment to the
treasurer will be sent out once you've been
added to the list.
