Itinerary:

This mentorship event is part of the AMP (Alpine Mentorship Program) organized by ACC Calgary section jointly with ACMG Guide Brent Peters.

This Alpine Mentorship Event is for individuals new to mountaineering. We are calling this event pre-AMP because there is no prior mountaineering experience required. If you have spent limited or no time on a glacier or wearing crampons, this is the event for you. The focus will be on developing safe skills for summer and winter mountaineering including rope systems for glacier travel, crevasse rescue, trip planning and navigation. Participants will have the opportunity create and execute whiteout navigation plans to stand on the summit of Mt Rhonda or other easier peaks on the Wapta Icefield. Focus will be on safe travel rather than on summits. The event will also teach you how to use glacier travel equipment. Previous scrambling and backpacking experience will be beneficial and will increase your enjoyment.

Cost: $316 (for all 3 days: Jun 21-23, 2018 and includes the cost of hut and ACGM Guide). This event is a great value compared to other similar events.

The curriculum for each day is as follows:

Day 1 - Hike into drive to Bow Lake, hike into Bow hut, practice use of mountaineering equipment, trip planning and navigation.

Day 2 - Glacier travel and crevasse rescue on the glacier with a summit attempt.

Day 3 - Glacier travel and practice with a possible summit attempt if time permits.

Since this event is for beginners we will not be screening participants. Who pays first, gets to go. Process to sign up is as follows:

  • Put your name on the waitlist.
  • Send an e-Transfer payment to the Treasurer at treasurerAMP@acccalgary.ca
  • Also send to the treasurer the following information: Name, Full address including postal code, phone number, email, course/event title and date, Trip Leader/Coordinator, and the password to accept payment.
  • Email the e-Transfer to the trip coordinator – Jenny Bradshaw – drjennybradshaw@gmail.com. Once I have confirmation from you that you have paid, I will move you from the waiting to the attendee list.
Required Items to Bring:

Gear required:

The club will provide ropes. You need your personal gear: Harness, mountaineering boots or solid hiking boots, crampons, glacier travel gear, ice axe, sleeping bag, etc. More detailed list will be provided closer to the event.

There will be no refunds for this event unless a suitable replacement is found that has been accepted by the event organizer.
Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
