How to suck less and be more better at…. is
a monthly/periodic series
designed to help facilitate ongoing peer
learning. Speakers are
volunteers who feel somewhat knowledgeable and
are willing to
help others achieve basic knowledge in an area-
they are by no
means experts, and may in fact not be the most
knowledgeable
person in attendance. The goal is to help
improve the knowledge
and skill level of all members who participate
on mountain trips
through regular skill updates. Discussion and
participant input is
welcomed during sessions.
Step one, don’t get into an avalanche. Blow
step one? You better
know how to respond. Phil’s main qualification
other than
surviving 15+ years of skiing in the
backcountry, is abject terror at
the thought of dying in a slide which he will
attempt to impart on
everyone.
There will first be a discussion ways to stay
safe - fancy gear,
terrain management and most importantly,
discussing things as a
group; then get ready to spend a bunch of time
talking about
various techniques for working as a group,
beacon
searches, shoveling,
probe lines and finally not falling into the
traps which can affect your judgement and
safety margins
(guess which
one is really
important and often overlooked?). This session
is about discussing
options and getting people thinking - pros and
cons of different
gear and ways of doing things.
Once our time is up at the Library, we'll
wander over to The Trop where anyone who's
interested can continue our discussions over a
pint of beer
Required Items to Bring:
Nothing - unless you've got a cool piece of kit to
show off.
** The ‘How to suck less and be more better at’
series is put on by
volunteers, who are by no means experts or
guides, just people
who are willing to share some knowledge in an
area. Discussion
and participant input is welcomed.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
Trip Feedback If you have any feedback, positive or negative, concerning this trip or any other, we want to hear from you!
