OPTIONAL
Plan A: Leave Calgary at some point on Saturday, drive to Beauty Creek Hostel and spend the night there. The big advantage is that you avoid a really early start which you would otherwise have to face if you wanted to drive to the trailhead on Sun morning. The drive is about 3 hours and the scramble starts at 7am on Sun as it will be a long day! If you choose this RECOMMENDED option, you would be responsible for calling the Beauty Creek Hostel to reserve your bed. I (Eva) will be leaving the city at around 4pm on Sat and will have room for one passenger, if there's interest.
There is a 10% discount for Hi Hostel members. See site for details: http://www.hihostels.ca/1084/Home/Canada-Hostels/Alberta-Hostels/index.hostel?p=ab
It's a wilderness hostel with no running water (No showers/No flush toilets) -- they do have purified drinking water for cooking
Plan B: You may prefer to hit the road early on Sun morning and meet at the trailhead (Stanley Falls - park at a pull-off area on the East side of the Icefields Parkway). For more info, see Kane's book page 312. Please ensure you're there by no later than 7:20am. I can help to arrange carpooling from Calgary if needed.
Sunday:
Leave the hostel by 7am and enjoy a beautiful day on Sunwapta. The views from this peak are absolutely stunning and the weather forecast looks great. Descend and drive back to Calgary.
** NOTE **
Even though this is an easy scramble, it is a long, long slog up with the elevation gain of 1735m (greater than Mt Temple) therefore this trip is not for beginners. Please make sure you are in good physical shape to attempt this scramble.
Sunwapta Peak: 3315m
Elevation gain: 1735m
Round trip time: 7-12 hrs (could be longer or shorter depending on conditions of terrain, weather and group.
Round trip distance: 13km
Technical difficulty: easy scramble
Fitness level: advanced
Pace: Expect this trip to be at a moderate and steady pace. If weather permits, expect quick stops for pictures and an extended break on the summit.
The organizer has not been in the area, therefore be prepared for assisting with route-finding if needed. Or at least bring some patience :-)
