Itinerary:

Mont Blanc Training Camp and Pre-trip Meeting

Note: this trip is intended primarily to participants (confirmed or waitlisted) in the ACC Calgary Section Mont Blanc Expedition running from August 13 to August 20, 2016 (http://acccalgaryc.web712.discountasp.net/even ts/details.asp?eventid=2950). Participants should be available the full weekend (Friday 5 p.m. to Sunday 9 p.m.) even though the actual trip may not last the full 2 1/3 day scheduled depending on the objective selected. The trip will be camping- or hut-based depending on mountain objective. Participants should be willing to pay hut fees if needed (up to $30 per night) and/or have an annual National Parks Wilderness Pass.

Proposed schedule:

Friday: leave Calgary around 5 p.m. on, and drive towards our mountain objective for the weekend
Saturday: approach and climb
Sunday: climb more and return to car; pub stop and Mont Blanc Trip discussions on the way back to Calgary. We will aim to be back in town by 10 p.m.

The mountain objective(s) will be selected by trip leaders on Wednesday May 25 based primarily on the weather forecast and conditions, and secondly on participants preferences. We will climb somewhere no matter what the weather is, though our objective will be scaled down accordingly, as needed.

Plan A: Climb a high peak in Canadian Rockies

In the Lake Louise area
Suggested peaks:
Mt Huber: 11-km hiking approach to Lake O'Hara from the road, steep rock, glacier, 11,000er
Mt Aberdeen: easy multi-pitch ice climb, glacier, 10,300er, very long single day climb
Mt Lefroy: 11-km hiking approach to Lake O'Hara, deep snow approach to Abbott Pass, steep snow climb, 11,000er

In the Southern Rockies
Mt Harrisson (North couloir route): 6-h drive, 3-hour approach hike to bivy site, 12-16 hour steep snow/ice multiptich climb, 11,000er

By the Columbia Icefields
Andromeda Mountain (Skyladder route): 3.5-h drive, steep snow/ice multiptich climb, 11,000er

Plan B: Climb a peak in the Abraham Lake area

Suggested peaks:
Mount Abraham and/or Elliot Peak, or combined with a visit of the Cline River Via Ferrata (free, https://vimeo.com/34410001)

Plan C: Waterton National Park scrambles

Required Items to Bring:
Mountaineering gear (for glacier travel and steep ice and snow; possibly avalanche gear). Rock shoes. Overnight camping/bivy gear. Dependent on the mountain objective selected.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:
Please review our participant responsibility guidelines!

*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
