Itinerary: |
This is a very different course in that the
focus is on "efficient" motion on varied
terrain. It is not at all about doing hard rock
climbing. Many good climbers seem to spend too
much time on easy routes, not because of
inability but because of inefficiency. On day
one participants will:
• Spend time short-roping and learning to
use terrain for belays plus setting up quick,
simple, safe anchors.
• Examine the gear used on alpine routes
and see how their selection can be improved.
• Learn to optimize everything you carry
and how you carry it.
The intent on this weekend is to learn a lot of
new techniques and climb an alpine route.
You’ll begin your first lessons on easy terrain
near Banff where you will nail down some
foundation skills such as movement on rock,
alpine rope work, short roping, belay station
management, rappel station management and
safety topics.
The activities of the second day will depend on
the weather and your progress. Suffice it to
say that the objective will be to put the
skills to use on an alpine rock climb where you
will practice the skills learned on day one.
The route you will do has no climbing harder
than 5.4/5.4 and is predominantly easy 3rd and
4th class.
The cost for the weekend course is $175
Prerequisites: • Experience seconding
rock or ice climbs; experience on a few
scrambles; experience leading easy rock is an
asset; good fitness.
