Itinerary:

How to suck less and be more better at…. is a series designed to help facilitate ongoing peer learning. Speakers are volunteers who feel somewhat knowledgeable and are willing to help others achieve basic knowledge in an area- they are by no means experts, and may in fact not be the most knowledgeable person in attendance. The goal is to help improve the knowledge and skill level of all members who participate on mountain trips through regular skill updates. Discussion and participant input is welcomed during sessions.

So you spent the winter at the gym and now you're amped to get outside and get climbing on real rock! Problem is - you don't want to be reliant on other people putting up a rope for you. In How to Suck Less and Be More Better At: Top Roping - we'll head out to a crag and talk about setting up top ropes. We'll go over things like how to access the top of a climb, how to safely approach the edge, how to build a simple bolted anchor and how to clean a route.

Please remember that this is informal education - there are no professionals here, just a couple of club members willing to share how and why they do things - and we could even get stuff wrong. You should evaluate what we're saying and decide if it makes sense to YOU before you trust your life to anything.

Katherine is a grumpy Kiwi from Vancouver (she's confused about where 'home' is) who's been climbing for a bunch of years and worked as a hiking guide in a past life. A mountaineering trip to Chile somehow made her lactose intolerant thanks to a parasite, so if you want to safeguard your food - just slather it in butter. Phil is a skier, also from Vancouver, who isn't sure what to do when there's no snow so periodically takes a crack at being a climber. He was a canoe guide in a past life which is far more legitimate than 'hiking guide' if you ask him. He routinely slathers food in butter and then doesn't tell Katherine about it because 'accidentally' poisoning a friend is fun if you're a terrible person.

Bring warm clothes in case it gets chilly and bring food because we'll be eating dinner at the crag.

** The ‘How to suck less and be more better at’ series is put on by volunteers, who are by no means experts or guides, just people who are willing to share some knowledge in an area. Discussion and participant input is welcomed.

There's limited space and these things tend to have waiting lists - if you need to back out, please do so as far in advance as possible so that we can fill it with another person.
Cancellation Policy
If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.

Trip Feedback
If you have any feedback, positive or negative, concerning this trip or any other, we want to hear from you! You can send any feedback you may have to the Section Chair.
