This course will be a standard AST2
Course
offered over 4 days from March 7th to
March
10th by ACMG Mountain Guide Matt
Mueller.
The Avalanche Skills Training Level 2
course
will provide an intermediate level
decision-
making framework that is suitable for
people
with a moderate degree of training and
experience.
The course will include a half day of
classroom
time and 3 1/2 days in the field.
At the end of the course,students
should be
able to:
-use the Avaluator 2 as a filtering
tool to
determine when additional planning and
travel
techniques are required to travel
safely.
-be familiar with Avalanche Danger
Ratings
verification techniques for personal
use on a
local scale.
-be familiar with the ATES technical
model as a
means to develop personal,local
terrain
ratings.
-use route finding to take advantage
of nuances
in terrain to manage personal risk.
-use travel techniques in avalanche
terrain
appropriate to the avalanche
conditions.
-proficiently carry out a companion
rescue.
-understand the limits of their
training.
Logistics:
The course will stage out of Canmore
Saturday
March 7th and 8th and Rogers Pass on
March 9th
and 10th. Half of the day on the 7th
will be
spent in the classroom then out in the
field.
Sunday will be a field day as well.
Sunday
night, a group reservation has been
made at the
Kicking Horse River Lodge to
facilitate the
next day's travel to Rogers Pass. A
group rate
of $40 has been secured but this is
optional
for the participants. The cost of the
guide's
accommodation is factored into the
group price
however. Monday the 9th will stage at
Rogers
Pass and the Wheeler hut has been
reserved for
our group. The price of the hut is
included in
the course cost. Tuesday will be
another field
day in Rogers Pass.

AST1 is a prerequisite for this course
and
participants should have some
experience to get
the most out of the course. If you
have any
questions, feel free to contact the
organizers.
Minimum gear requirements: Backcountry
ski
equipment, pack, avalanche safety
gear. The
guide will provide more info the week
before
the course on required gear. Class
material
will be provided.

Cancellation Policy: Courses are
offered at a
discounted rate and due to the
popularity of
these clinics, full payment must be
received to
book your spot. There will be no
refund for
cancellations.
Cancellation Policy If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
