Itinerary:
This is one-day course designed to introduce the basic concepts of drytooling—the use of ice axes and crampons on rock in a winter setting. Topics covered will include safety considerations, leashless climbing techniques, various pick placements, crampon footwork, efficient movement and pump-avoidance strategies. The Playground is an area developed solely for drytooling practice that hosts well-bolted routes from M5 to M10. Prerequisite: No previous ice or mixed experience is necessary for this course. However, some climbing experience is necessary whether it be indoor/outdoor, lead/top-rope or rock/ice. The only real prerequisite is that participants must be able to offer a safe top-rope belay. The course will be taught by Sarah Hueniken, a full ACMG Alpine Guide. (See Sarah's brief Bio below)

This trip will be a first-come-first-serve and this is based on who can deliver their $115 cheque/cash/INTERAC e-Transfer first. Your payment options are as follows: mail a cheque out to the attention of "Alpine Club of Canada - Calgary Section" to the address I will email you once a few have registered.. Or send an INTERAC e- Transfer to the ACC Treasurer using the Treasurer@ACCCalgary.ca email address, NOT forgetting to give him your name, email and the coures it is for!

Required Items to Bring:
harness, helmet, belay device, boots and crampons (mono-points are ideal but not necessary).

Recommended Items to Bring:
Warm clothes and a down jacket considering you will be sitting around listening a lot. Bring your own food for lunch and snacks and a warm/hot drink.

Notes:

Sarah Hueniken has been living and guiding in Canmore for the past 12 years. As a full ACMG Alpine guide, she spends her summers guiding rock and alpine and her winters guiding ice and mixed routes. Having climbed for over 20 years, Sarah has traveled and worked in various places throughout the US, Mexico, South America and Asia to explore the mountains of the world. Highlights have included a first ascent of a 6000m peak bordering Tibet (Sachun 5.10+ M5), new ice lines in Iceland and Canada, first ascent of sea stacks in Newfoundland, Spray Ice, and participating in various climbing competitions. Sarah also works with Chicks with Picks, NOLS, and is an Outdoor Research, Hot Chillys and Sterling Rope sponsored athlete.
