Winter Mountaineering Weekend with Cyril
Shokoples
Are you into winter scrambles, pushing the limits on snowshoe
trips, or curious about the skills required to tag some summits in
winter? Would you like to develop your winter mountaineering skills
with instruction from an ACMG guide? Then read on!
The ACC Calgary Section is hosting a “Winter Mountaineering
course” on March 21-22, 2015. This experimental new course
introduces you to some basic skills for undertaking ascents in
winter. The intent of this course is to try to ascend at least one
summit (if weather and conditions allow)! This is not a ski course
and we will be traveling on foot for both days. During our ascents
we will be discussing route finding, pace setting, evaluating terrain
and other related topics including emergency communications and
other leadership related concepts. We will attempt to select peaks
that are straightforward but have some technical challenges that
may involve ropework at a basic level. Both days will be outdoors all
day in the eastern slopes of the Rockies in either K-Country or Banff
National Park.
Participants should have climbing, belaying and rappelling skills in a
summer environment and be very proficient in use of the standard
climbing knots. Experience in summer ascending peaks (either
scrambling or technical mountaineering) is an asset.
Prerequisites: Summer climbing, belaying and rappelling
