Are you leading, or thinking of leading,
Ski Touring trips for the
Alpine Club? Would you like to develop your
leadership skills
with instruction from an ACMG guide? Then read
on!
This is a two day ski course that takes us into the field to
attempt two ski tours in avalanche terrain. This is an opportunity to
get out front of a group and lead under the mentorship of an ACMG
mountain guide. Participants must be fit and have reasonable ski
skills in variable conditions with a pack on. We will undertake the
ski tours back to back on Saturday and Sunday. We will practice
track setting, pacing, navigation and decision making in avalanche
terrain. Trail breaking will be shared between the participants.
Each participant will be responsible for researching and planning
two trips including determining the ATES rating and using the
Avaluator trip planner to determine the feasibility of each trip prior
to the weekend given the current avalanche danger rating.
Each student will be required to bring a copy of the Decision
Making in Avalanche Terrain fieldbook (available at MEC) as we will
be using it in our pre-trip briefings as well as using it in the field to
facilitate our decision making.
It is best that people already have sound avalanche skills for this
course as it assumes folks have good transceiver and companion
rescue skills and don't need to be told what facets and surface hoar
are. In fact, it is best if people have already taken an AST 2 course
or equivalent, but it is not mandatory providing you have
reasonable experience and knowledge.
This course is designed to
improve leadership skills and build confidence
for those leading Ski Touring ACC trips.
Prerequisites:
AST 1 plus experience are absolutely
essential;
AST 2 highly recommended; must have good ski skills in
variable ski conditions with a pack on.Day One – Lake Louise area
Day Two - Banff, Yoho or Kootenay Park depending upon
conditions
Meals and accommodations are the responsibility of participants. It
is suggested that participants stay in Lake Louise on Saturday night.
