The Climbers Access Society of Alberta has taken the following position on the SSRP:
The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan will guide the land decisions, policy, and government funding for the next ten years. The legacy of those decisions and policy will last much longer -- 10 to 20 years. Recreational users voiced strong reaction to the original draft and it resulted in some changes to the current document. We are asking to people to attend the public information sessions and voice changes to the framework. Our ability to get out and climb will be directly affected by this plan!
We are advocating that Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resources to develop and implement a Master Recreational Plan for each of the sub-regions, just as it has integrated resource plans for each of the sub-regions. The goal of the recreational master plan to plan and manage activities on crown lands in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way. It should be implemented with public input at a regional level. At present, there is at best an ad-hoc planning process for recreational activities South Saskatchewan area with little systematic public input, and we've seen the result of that. Restricted access, people using old seismic lines for trails, environmental impacts. There are no provisions for AESRD planning for crown lands in the draft SSRP, we need to change that or we are looking at more closures and restricted access in the future.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
