This 4 day trip will test your navigation and
route-finding skills. We will leave Calgary
Friday, Jan 3 at 6:00 am and drive to Fernie
(about 3 hr drive) then ski to the hut; this
should take about 3-4 hrs. There are 2 approaches
to the hut and both have some avi terrain that we
will have to navigate. After we get to the hut we
will drop our packs off and enjoy a few runs. If
the avi conditions are high, this trip will be
postponed. We will spend 3 nights at the hut.
Exploring the chutes and tree skiing for the next
3 days. The 4th day we ski out in the later
afternoon and drive back to Calgary. Expect to be
home late.
All participants are expected to participate in
route finding, avi conditions assessment and in
carrying group gear.
Money part: To get on the trip put your name on the
waitlist. If you have been selected, you will be
contacted and asked to send in your email money
transfer. You will have 3 days to submit your
payment. If you don’t pay on time, you will be
removed from the trip. The cost of the hut is
$37.50 per person for 3 nights. You need to bring
your own propane, food and money to pay the
driver.
Equipment: Thunder Meadows hut is equipped with the
following:
Wood heater and wood supply.
Propane camp stove and lantern (we must bring
our own 1lb propane canisters and carry them out).
Meltwater pot and greywater pot. Water source
is from snowmelt so please keep the snow around
the hut clean. Poor hygiene and dogs will
contaminate the only water source.
Outdoor toilet located 30m behind the hut.
Axe and shovel and fire extinguisher.
Guests need to bring their own sleeping bag,
sleeping mat, safety equipment and 1 lb. propane
bottles.
Carry everything out that you brought in:
no food, garbage, or ‘gifts’ left behind that
other members would have to clean up and pack out
for you.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
