Itinerary:
Originally created for the ACC Calgary Section, the Ice Rescue course has now been run successfully for two winters. This is not a course for beginners and is in fact an entry level leadership course. Participants should have good belay/rappel skills and be very proficient in the use of standard climbing knots. Participants should have the ability to comfortably lead WI2 and second comfortably to WI3 minimum. The first day of the course is an introduction to single rope rescue techniques including escaping the belay, load transfers, releasing auto-locking devices and rigging raising and lowering systems. Rappel saftey systems and the use of Purcell Prusiks will be covered. The second day will review these items and add more systems and complexity. Depending upon participant skill levels a multi-pitch rescue scenario may be attempted. Each participant will recieve a Climbing Self Rescue textbook and a complete set of Purcell Prusiks as part of the course fee. There is a pre-course reading assignment to allow better use of our time in the field. This makes it important for people to sign up at least two to three weeks in advance. As this is a leadership type course, the Calgary Section will subsidize 50% of the fees. Cost to participants will be $125 and includes Climbing Self Rescue textbook and a set of Purcell Prusiks.
