This TWO DAY (over the w.end) course is intended to be a comprehensive update on avalanche skills and not a ski course.
This course is for people who have already taken an AST 1/2 or an older basic/advanced RAC course and want to catch up on what has been going on with:
the Avaluator 2 (new in autumn 2010!),
new tests (PST, ECT) and fracture character (with both CT and RB results),
the ATES scale (advanced or technical model),
persistent weak layers,
Yellow Flags and Lemons for interpreting snow profiles,
digital beacon technology advances,
what's new with avalanche balloons and the Avalung 2,
tactical avalanche triage,
strategic / conveyor belt shoveling,
new multiple and deep burial search strategies (i.e. micro search strip)
human factors research and more additional snow safety skills.
Don't know what these things are? Maybe this course would be good then!
It is best that people already have sound avalanche skills for this course as it assumes folks have good beacon skills and don't need to be told what facets and surface hoar are.
In fact, it is best if people have already taken an Advanced RAC or AST 2 course, but it is not mandatory providing you have solid experience and knowledge.
This is course will be taught by Cyril Shokoples, highly experienced, fully qualified ACMG Mountain guide.
Required Items to Bring:
Wide skis, boots (AT or Tele), poles skins, large day pack.
Level: Leadership or relatively experienced follower level.
Prerequisites:
AST 1 / RAC plus experience are absolutely essential;
AST 2 or ARAC highly recommended; must have good ski skills in variable ski conditions
FOOD/ACCOMMODATION: meals and accommodations are the responsibility of participants.
PRICE: $65 per person. Application process: As this course is focused on existing/aspiring ski leaders and HEAVILY subsidized by the Calgary Section, those interested in attending must request and submit an application form by December11, 2013. Applicants will be evaluated by the T&L committee and selected based on information from the applications.
Upon being accepted and moved from the wait list, participants may either send a cheque to 65 Tararidge Close NE Calgary, T3J 2P5, Or, send an INTERAC e-Transfer to the ACC Treasurer using the Treasurer@ACCCalgary.ca email address.Don't forget to also send the e-Transfer pasword to the treasurer.
Cancellation Policy: withdrawal with a full refund may be available up to 2 weeks before course start ONLY if qualified participant from waiting list is available. No date changes, withdrawals or refunds afterwards.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
