This popular course is for persons familiar with
ski touring who want to learn the techniques
necessary for safe travel on glaciated terrain
from an internationally certified mountain guide.
This course introduces you to ski touring on
glaciated terrain including glacier formations and
hazards, roped travel, crevasse rescue, track
setting, route finding and related topics. The
first day will be mostly classroom with some
outdoor work near the classroom to practice
crevasse rescue. The second day will be a glacier
field trip.
The instruction for the first day of the course
takes place in Canmore with the second day at the
Columbia Icefields.
Participants must able to ski up and down hill
with a full day pack in variable off trail snow
conditions.
Each participant will receive a Backcountry Skiing
text book and complete set of Purcell Prusiks as
part of the course fee.
There is a pre-course reading assignment to allow
better use of our time in the field.
Level: introductory/intermediate level-
This is not a leadership level course
Instructor: The course will be taught by
Cyril Shokoples, an internationally
certified mountain guide. Cyril has been guiding
and teaching with the Alpine Club for several
years, and has acquired a reputation for teaching
excellence.
Price: $190 per person. Includes:
Backcountry Skiing textbook, complete set of
Purcell Prusiks and tax.
Upon being accepted and moved from the wait list,
participants may either send a cheque to the ACC,

Can ski in control with a pack on all green
run and some blue runs at a mountain ski resort.
AST1 or RAC recommended

Wide skis, boots (AT or telemark), poles, skins,
LARGE day pack

Each person will receive a complete set of
Purcell Prusiks to
keep at the conclusion of the course.
Meals and accommodations are the responsibility
of participants.

No cancellations or changes once you are moved to
the participants list.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
