Itinerary:
Join ACC members, Vera Neverkevich and Ben Stephenson, who will share photos, video and stories from 2 classic mountaineering objectives; Khan Tengri - “the most northerly 7000-er” and Mt Kenya - the second highest peak in Africa. Khan Tengri, in the Tien Shan of Kazakhstan, is one of 5 peaks over 7000m in the ex-Soviet block. Summiteers of these 5 peaks are given the prestigious Snow Leopard award. To ascend a big peak in the ex-Soviet states, Vera and Ben were advised to “climb like a Russian”, which basically means accepting a lot of risk, and the vodka is optional. Whilst Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, Mt Kenya is known as the mountaineer’s objective. The highest peak is a 17+ pitch climb straight up the plug of an extinct volcano which straddles the equator. The scenery and wildlife are stunning, and the climbing is pretty good too !
