www.calgaryherald.com/news/Calgarian+killed+climbing+accident/7108349/story.html
Rick was a tremendous person, outdoor leader, environmental and social activist, and climber. He was one of the few to summit all 54 of the 11,000ers in the Canadian Rockies, and was still going strong at age 71.
Please come out to remember Rick, share stories with friends, and connect with Rick's family.
Rick Collier Mountaineer and Activist
Rick was the second mountaineer to climb all 11,000 ft peaks in the Canadian Rockies, He was the first and possibly only mountaineer to climb all named peaks in the first edition of "Rockies Mountains South" of which there are 600+. Rick climbed more than 1,300 different peaks in Canada (including Logan), the United States, South America (including Aconcagua), Europe. With a couple of scorers of first ascents.
Rick cycled in Europe, and all around the States (down the west coast, across to the east coast and back to Calgary) and all the way down the Mississippi on different trips. He also canoed from Prince Rupert to Alaska.
He was an active member of Amnesty International, and Plowshares among many other socially active organizations.
Collier ran as an NDP candidate for Calgary-Glenmore in the 2012 provincial election. (http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/08/17/rick-collier-ndp-candidate-dies-mountain-climbing_n_1799854.html)
A former literature instructor at Mount Royal College for 25 years, he was awarded the "Instructor of the Year" on three different occasions. He was a very provocative Instructor.
Rick was an active member of the Calgary Section of the ACC from the 1980's. His strident support for the environment was opposed by some members of the section at that time. Rick then became a founding member and most ardent supporter of the Old Goat Mountaineering Club. Later, Rick became an extremely active member of the Calgary Section and the Rocky Mountain Ramblers.
Regarding the accident; "The previous 2 pitches were solid, the current pitch looked solid, 5.4, but a large section of the face let go. Rick landed on his head on a ledge, and died within minutes of the incident. Two other members of the party were injured by rock fall, one was not."
