PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE
REGISTRATION!!
Are you leading, or thinking of leading, alpine
trips for the Alpine Club?
Would you like to develop your leadership skills
with instruction from an ACMG guide? Then read
on!
The ACC Calgary Section is hosting an “Intro to
Alpine Climbing Weekend” course on Jun 16 and 17,
2012.
Prerequisites: Experience following multi pitch
rock climbs. Some rock leading
experience and experience on moderate to difficult
scrambles would also be
beneficial. *** For the enjoyment of all
participants, please make sure you cover these
prerequisites ***
This is a very different course in that the focus
is on "efficient" motion
on varied terrain. It is not at all about doing
hard rock climbing. Many
good climbers seem to spend too much time on easy
routes or easy sections of
routes, not because of inability but because of
inefficiency. We will spend
a lot of time short-roping, a little known skill
used extensively in the
guiding profession to proceed quickly up easy
terrain.
We will examine the gear used on alpine routes and
see how our selection can
be improved. We will look at optimizing the things
we carry and how we carry
it. The intent on this weekend is to learn some
new techniques and climb
an alpine route. No wasting time here. We begin
our first lessons on very
easy terrain and spend the day on easier terrain
near Banff. This
straightforward terrain has a lot of lessons to
offer us.
The activities of the second day will depend on
the weather and our
progress. Suffice it to say that the objective may
be an easy alpine summit
for day two. Since we will be doing an alpine
climb, your fitness level
should be good.
The course will be taught by Cyril Shokoples, an
internationally certified mountain guide. Cyril
has a long history with the ACC, particularly
teaching the flagship TNF Leadership courses. He
also regularly trains Canadian military SARTECHs
and Canadian Parks Service Wardens, amongst many
others, and has received Distinguished Service
Awards from both the ACC and the ACMG.
The cost for the weekend course is $85 as it is
being subsidized by the ACC Calgary Section.
Participants will be selected on a first come
