Winter Camping and Snow Shelters course

This weekend will be based out of a backcountry tent camp. Once several tents are erected and a tent camp prepared as a back-up in case of emergency, the group will construct various shelters including igloos, snow caves and / or quinzees. The group will then sleep in the shelters made on the first day. Additional types of emergency shelters may be completed on the second day.

Travel on skis through simple avalanche terrain may be required in order to reach the campsite.

Each participant will receive a Winter Camping Text Book as part of the course fee.

Level: introductory/intermediate level- This is not a leadership level course

Length: 2 days/one overnight in the backcountry

IMPORTANT UPDATE TO THE COURSE!!!!! Updated on March 16,2011

Cyril the instructor for this course has been trying to find the best location for the course and after checking with Kananaskis and Parks Canada, he recommends to have this course based on Hilda Hostel at Parkers Ridge. In case weather does not cooperate too much, we can go into the Hostel during the day for cooking, warm up, or more comfortable lectures. People interested on sleeping and spending the night in one of the shelters built during the course will still have this opportunity with the great advantage that if during the night someone changes their mind, the hostel will be available. The only downside of these benefits is that it has a cost and we'll need to pay $20 more per person. Original cost was $160, now $180 for the 2 days course. Tents won't be required anymore and we'll need to practice Leave no Trace standards during the course. Also, participants will have the option to use skies or snowshoes during the course.

Instructor: The course will be taught by Cyril Shokoples, an internationally certified mountain guide. Cyril has been guiding and teaching with the Alpine Club for several years, and has acquired a reputation for teaching excellence.

Price:

$180 per person. Includes: Winter Camping textbook, hostel and tax.
