Beaverfoot Range Traverse: part IV
With various partners, I have over the past three years
completed the north section of the traverse of the Beaverfoot
Range -- three trips of 3-5 days each; it is now time to start
working away at the south end of this extensive massif that runs
from Radium NW to Golden.
It does not involve difficult climbing, but the terrain is remote
and virtually untouched -- there will be considerable elevation
gain, navigational challenges, bushwhacking, side-hill gouging,
and problems that cannot be anticipated; there will also be
incredible views, high alpine countryside, and delightful camp
spots.
We will start at the staging area for Diana Lake and over the
course of the next five days ascend, descend, and traverse north
to Harrogate Pass. Here is an approximate itinerary (revisions
will of necessity have to be made during the trek, depending on
weather, snowpack, bush, side-hills, etc.):
Day 1: Start at GR 550338 (approx) on 82 K/16; hike the trail to
Diana Lake and then up into the alpine to the N (9 km and 4300’
elevation gain); camp at GR 524407
Day 2: from camp #1 follow the ridge for 6.1 km, with 2400’ of
elevation gain/loss over several intervening summits, to camp at
GR 496435
Day 3: from camp #2 follow the ridge for 6.8 km, with 2300’ of
elevation gain/loss, again over minor and major unnamed
summits, to camp at GR 471468
Day 4: from camp #3 follow the ridge for 5.2 km, with 2100’ of
elevation gain/loss, to camp at GR 447490
Day 5: from camp #4 follow the ridge over the last major
summit (or around it) for 3 km, with 700’ of elevation gain/loss,
to Harrogate Pass; descend for 10 km and 4000’ to the W to the
community of Harrogate on the Radium/Golden Hwy (where we
will have left a vehicle).
If you like exploring and are willing to solve back-country
problems and obstacles as they arise; if you enjoy the high
country and its wildlife; if you want to get away from your
computer screen for five days . . . then this might be the trip for
you!
