Scrambling Leadership Weekend
Are you leading, or thinking of leading, scrambling trips for the Alpine Club? Would you like to develop your leadership skills with instruction from an ACMG guide? Then read on!
The ACC Calgary Section is hosting a “Scrambling Leadership Weekend” course on Jul 24 and 25, 2010.
This is designed to improve leadership skills and build confidence for those leading ACC trips on scrambling terrain. Participants must have solid scrambling skills and be comfortable leading groups on moderate scrambles. This is a unique opportunity to advance your skills alongside your peers, under the supervision of a highly experienced, fully qualified ACMG Mountain guide.
Topics may include, but are not limited to: group management, route selection, route finding, dealing with emergencies, communication, risk management, pacing, the attributes of a good leader, gear selection, and choosing appropriate climbs for club trips.
The course will begin in David Thompson Country for the first day and head to the Columbia Icefields area for the second day. This should provide a cool mix of not too familiar terrain and nice scrambles.
The course will be taught by Cyril Shokoples, an internationally certified mountain guide. Cyril has a long history with the ACC, particularly teaching the flagship TNF Leadership courses. He also regularly trains Canadian military SARTECHs and Canadian Parks Service Wardens, amongst many others, and has received Distinguished Service Awards from both the ACC and the ACMG.
The cost for the weekend course is $70 as it is being subsidized by the ACC Calgary Section but a deposit cheque for $150 will be required by application.(Cheque will be returned if applicant not selected or after completion of the course)
