Intro to Alpine Climbing Weekend

Are you leading, or thinking of leading, alpine trips for the Alpine Club? Would you like to develop your leadership skills with instruction from an ACMG guide? Then read on!

The ACC Calgary Section is hosting an “Intro to Alpine Climbing Weekend” course on Jun 19 and 20, 2010.

Prerequisites: experience following multi pitch rock climbs. Some leading experience and experience on moderate or difficult scrambles would also be beneficial.

This is a very different course in that the focus is on "efficient" motion on varied terrain. It is not at all about doing hard rock climbing. Many good climbers seem to spend too much time on easy routes or easy sections of routes, not because of inability but because of inefficiency. We will spend a lot of time short-roping, a little known skill used extensively in the guiding profession to proceed quickly up easy terrain.

We will examine the gear used on alpine routes and see how our selection can be improved. We will look at optimizing the things we carry and how we carry it. The intent on this weekend is to learn some new techniques and climb an alpine route. No wasting time here. We begin our first lessons on very easy terrain and spend the day on easier terrain near Banff. This straightforward terrain has a lot of lessons to offer us.

The activities of the second day will depend on the weather and our progress. Suffice it to say that the objective may be an easy alpine summit for day two. Since we will be doing an alpine climb, your fitness level should be good.

The course will be taught by Jeremy Mackenzie, an internationally certified mountain guide. Jeremy has been guiding and teaching with the Alpine Club for several years, including at the GMC, and has also taught mountain skills to Canadian military SAR Techs.

The cost for the weekend course is $70 as it is being subsidized by the ACC Calgary Section but a deposit cheque for $150 will be required by application. (Cheque will be returned if applicant not selected or after completion of the course)

Application process: The T&L Committee will receive applications until Jun 10, 2010 and select participants by June 14, 2010 based on experience and willingness to lead trips for the section.

If interested please request your application by email to Enrique Canto

Required Items to Bring:

Bring your harness, helmet, a couple of locking carabiners, a small rock climbing rack including 4 to 6 cams and a half dozen nuts plus some 60cm sewn slings and carabiners, a 120cm sewn sling plus a cordellete or two. Be sure to have your lunch, water and lightweight but appropriate clothing packed. A three section collapsible ski pole is handy on the ascents and descents. Otherwise, BRING NO JUNK. We will be practicing alpine climbing, not weight lifting!

Recommended Items to Bring:

Be sure your clothing can handle the changes in mountain environment, including heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, sun and insects. We are outside all day on both days, and the course will proceed in all but the most severe weather.

You are responsible for your own meals, accommodation and transportation for the entire course. Be sure to prepare a bag lunch and bring water or other drinks for each day of the course, as we do not return to the vehicles for lunch.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:
Please review our participant responsibility guidelines!

*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
