My intended ski tour for the long weekend has recently suffered
'a sudden and catastrophic personnel displacement', i.e. my
partner has, for various reasons, had to bail.
However, I'm still keen on attempting this route: up Brewster
Creek, over Allenby Pass, down Bryant, and out to Shark. Might
be two days, but could be three. Might be wise to leave on
Friday, return on Sunday, if possible, given the forecast.
This is a trip that can be done solo, but I thought I’d post it to
the ACC just to see if there are any other ‘orphans’ who need a
trip for the long weekend.
Here's a general description (topos O/4 & J/13): Day #1 -- start
at the parking area on the Sunshine road just past the turn-off;
climb the initial hill (trail) and ski about 9.5 km to Sundance
lodge on Brewster Creek (track set); there's probably another
2-3 km further on SE along Brewster that will have broken trail;
12 km of trail-breaking on fairly flat terrain (trail) brings one to
the base of the climb to Allenby Pass (Camp I somewhere in this
section). Day #2 -- ski to the base of the first climb (warden
cabin at about 10.5 km); climb 1500' over 2 km to Allenby Pass
(GR 004-470); ski down Allenby Creek (1200' over 4.5 km)
(Camp II). Day #3 -- ski down the rest of Allenby Creek (750'
over 1.6 km); ski out Bryant Creek to Shark (about 20 km).
We can either set up the car shuttle the first day or I can try to
arrange for my wife to meet us on the third day.
Required Items to Bring:
Overnight gear (warm sleeping bag, tentage, etc.); one stove for
2-3 people; white gas. The usual avi gear (transceiver, probe
poles). Headlamp.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
