Itinerary:

A one day course to provide a basic understanding of improvised rope-rescue techniques so you can deal with simple cliff-side emergencies.  Techniques to be covered include: escaping the belay, emergency lowers, tandem rappels, raising systems, and damaged rope rappels. Course content can be adapted to the experience level of the group.


Required Items to Bring:

Harness, helmet, belay gloves, belay device with locking carabiner, two 120 cm sewn sling, one 60 cm sewn sling, 4-6 non locking carabiners, 6 locking carabiners (3 HMS/Munter), 13.5” hollowblock (or 1.5 m x 7 mm prusik), one 5 m x 7 mm cordelette 

Prerequisite: some climbing experience is necessary whether it be indoors or outdoors.  Participants must be able to offer a safe top-rope belay.  Knowledge of standard knots and hitches is recommended (clove hitch, prusik hitch, munter hitch, figure-8) but not necessary.

Sean Isaac is an ACMG alpine guide specializing in ice and mixed instruction.  He has been ice climbing for 30 years and guiding for the past 20.  He is the author of the ACC « Ice Climbing Leaders Field Handbook » and « How to Ice Climb » by Falcon.  He has also written the how-to book « Mixed Climbing » and the guidebook « Mixed Climbs in the Canadian Rockies ».

No refunds are provided unless a suitable participant can be found.


*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
