Introduction to Ice Climbing course for Women

The ACC Calgary Section is hosting an “Introduction to Ice Climbing Course for Women” course on Dec 19 and 20, 2009.

This course is designed for the ice climbing novice or for someone who wants a thorough review on ice climbing basics. We will spend two days outdoors top roping at two different venues. Possible areas will be, the Junkyards, King Creek, Wedge smears and or Haffner Creek. Learn everything from how to keep warm, to how to move smoothly on steeper ice. Emphasis will be on spending as much time as possible practicing on the ice!

Day One:
Equipment review, how to fit boots, crampons, harness, helmets, and tool leashes What to wear and how to keep warm! Learn how to walk in crampons for different angled ice Learn and practice how to, and where to properly swing the ice tool, Work on basic balance, footwork and triangle position Review belay technique and tie in Practice climbing with lots of coaching

Day Two;
Continue to refine climbing technique, with more emphasis on the triangle and efficiency. Learn how to place ice screws Learn how to build basic ice screw anchors and v-threads Learn how to coil the rope and basic equipment care Depending on the area, mixed climbing may also be touched upon and practiced.


The course will be taught by Sarah Hueniken, a full ACMG Alpine Guide. (See Sarah's brief Bio below)

The cost for the weekend course is $180 and the reception of the cheque for the course will reserve your spot on a first come first serve basis. Make your cheque to the order of ACC Calgary Section and mail it to Enrique Canto

The course can be converted into Co-ed if not enough women sign for it before Dec. 4, 2009.

Required Items to Bring:

Everyone should bring the following tems:
Harness, helmet, ice tools, crampons pre-adjusted to boots, boots suitable for ice climbing, locking carabiner and belay device.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Warm belay jacket,extra pair of gloves,thermos with hot drinks,lunch, sun screen and camera.

Sarah Hueniken's brief Bio.

Sarah Hueniken has been living and guiding in Canmore for the past 8 years. As a full ACMG Alpine guide, she spends her summers guiding rock and alpine and her winters guiding ice and mixed routes. Having climbed for over 16 years, Sarah has traveled and worked in various places throughout the US, Mexico, South America and Asia to explore the mountains of the world. Highlights have included a first ascent of a 6000m peak bordering Tibet (Sachun 5.10+ M5), new ice lines in Iceland, participating in various climbing competitions and achieving a personal goal of climbing 5.13. Sarah also works with Chicks with Picks, NOLS, and is an Outdoor Research and Sterling Rope sponsored athlete.

Withdrawal with refund before December 4 ONLY if qualified participant from wait list is available. No refunds after December 4.


*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
