Itinerary:

Welcome to the 4-day Avalanche Skills Training Level 2 course (AST2). The outline of this program is one day of classroom theory and three field days.

Objectives: • Use the Avaluator™ as a filtering tool to determine when additional planning and travel techniques are required to travel safely. • Be familiar with Avalanche Danger Ratings verification techniques for personal use on a local scale. • Be familiar with the ATES technical model as a means to develop personal, local terrain ratings. • Use routefinding to take advantage of nuances in terrain to manage personal risk. • Use travel techniques in avalanche terrain appropriate to the avalanche conditions. • Proficiently carry out a companion rescue. • Understand the limits of their training.

The cost of this course is $60 to cover mandatory course materials (books, etc) & licensing. Participants are responsible for providing their own beacon, shovel, and probe on the field days.

The field days are December 19/09, January 10/09, and January 24/09. Attendance for all 4 days is mandatory. Field day meeting times / locations will be determined later.

Participants will be required to travel on alpine touring, split snowboard, or telemark gear on the field days. Participants should be strong intermediate backcountry travellers. Please email with any questions you may have.

Participants should have prior backcountry touring and/or avalanche experience.

Required Items to Bring:
Field Days: Beacon, Shovel, Probe, AT, Tele Skis or Split Snowboard, Skins, Boots, Poles, Water, Lunch and Snacks, and Warm Clothes.

This is a club section trip and the program meets the criteria set for the CAC AST2. Participants will receive an AST2 certificate upon completion of all four days.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:
Please review our participant responsibility guidelines!

Attendance for all 4 days is mandatory.

*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
