How to suck less and be more better at…. is
a series
designed to help facilitate ongoing peer
learning. Speakers are
volunteers who feel somewhat knowledgeable and
are willing to
help others achieve basic knowledge in an area-
they are by no
means experts, and may in fact not be the most
knowledgeable
person in attendance. The goal is to help
improve the knowledge
and skill level of all members who participate
on mountain trips
through regular skill updates. Discussion and
participant input is
welcomed during sessions.
No more munter mules! This rock rescue session
will review the
use of Purcell Prusiks for rock rescue,
avoiding the endless munter
mule tying of the past. After some brief
demonstration and
discussion, we will spend most of the session
practicing how to set
up a pulley system to raise someone, and how to
switch to lower
someone (when bringing up a second). While open
to all skill levels, this event is probably
most useful for people with some pre-existing
rock rescue knowledge.
If you want to practice the techniques
discussed, please ensure
you bring
Purcell Prusiks or ~3m of soft 6mm cord to
make a
Purcell (6.5 Bluewater dynamic prusik cord is
even better, but the
only place I know of to get it is from Cyril)
Christine might not be the best climber around,
but she does
spend most of her free time in the mountains.
She recently
completed The North Face summer leadership
course, and is
looking to share some of the newer techniques
she picked up from
Cyril with the rest of the club.
After the session, people will be heading to
Side Street Pub and
Grill at 1167 Kensington cres NW. Feel free to
continue the
discussions or berate your presenter.

series is put on by
volunteers, who are by no means experts or
guides, just people
who are willing to share some knowledge in an
area. Discussion
and participant input is welcomed.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
