The ACC Calgary Section is hosting a Waterfall Ice Leadership Weekend course on January 10th and 11th , 2009, based in Canmore. The course is designed to support those who want to lead ACC Calgary Section trips on waterfall ice. It will help build your technical skills and confidence as a trip leader. This is a unique opportunity to advance your skills alongside your peers on challenging and beautiful Rockies waterfall ice, under the supervision of a highly experienced, fully qualified ACMG Mountain guide.

Topics will include, but are not limited to:

  • equipment selection and use,
  • placing protection on lead,
  • station management,
  • rope skills,
  • multi-pitch climbing and descending,
  • risk management, and
  • choosing appropriate climbs for club trips.

The course will be taught by Jeremy Mackenzie, an internationally certified mountain guide. Jeremy has been guiding and teaching with the Alpine Club for several years, and has acquired a reputation for teaching excellence.

To attend, you must be comfortable leading WI 3 multi-pitch climbs. There is no charge for the course - it is fully subsidised by the Calgary Section of the ACC - although a $150 deposit is required to hold your space. This will be returned to you after your participation in the course.

Space is limited to 5 participants. For an application form, or to discuss the course, contact Mark Lane, or phone (403) 247-5306).
You may also fill in the application found here: Ice Leadership Application Form and submit it to Mark via email. The deadline for application is November 28th, 2008. The Training and Leadership Committee will review applicants and finalize selection by December 12, 2008.
