Itinerary:
Four ACC members attended the first Flathead Fandango this past June, and everyone seemed to have had a wonderful time; however, two of our climbing objectives could not be reached because Sage Creek was too risky to cross: Langemarck Mt. (8450') and Flanders Mt. (7750'). However, once across the creek, old logging roads lead to the bases of these peaks; nevertheless, some bushwhacking may be required. The ascents are not difficult, but range from 2700' to 3700' of elevation gain. The southern Flathead area, especially along Sage Creek, is delightfully remote -- this will be a trip for those interested in seeing an exotic and and rarely visited region of the Rockies. The other advantage is that an automobile with reasonable clearance can drive right to our camping spot, a large grassy area where Roche Creek meets the Sage Creek road; in other words, this is a car-camping venue. It is, however, a five-hour drive from Calgary to Roche Creek, so two of our four days will be taken up with transporting ourselves to the Flathead: Day 1 (Friday, August 29): Drive to Roche Creek camping spot in the southern Flathead; there may be time for short hikes up Sage or Roche Crks. Day 2 (Saturday, August 30): Climb Flanders Mountain Day 3 (Sunday, August 31): Climb Langemarck Mountain Day 4 (Monday, September 1): Drive back to Calgary
