Costs: $275 per person (includes both days).
Course Description: Sean Isaac is an ACMG Alpine Guide and
sponsored climber. This course is for hikers, scramblers and
climbers who want to learn the basics about glacier travel. This
two-day course will cover glaciology for climbers, dividing the
rope for glacier travel, shorting the rope, firn-line transitions,
route finding, crevasse rescue, snow and ice anchors. Day 1 will be
practicing these techniques on the toe of the glacier, and day 2 will
be applying all learned techniques during an ascent of a mountain.
Prerequisites: Participants do not need any previous glacier travel
knowledge but some hiking or scrambling experience is a good
idea. The course instructor has extra crampons, ice axes,
harnesses and helmets for use on a first-ask, first-serve basis if
participants do not have their own.
Required Items to Bring:
Harness, helmet, belay device (auto-blocking like ATC-Guide or
Reverso is recommended), 4-5 locking carabiners (at least one
being a Munter shape), 4 non-locking carabiners, 1 double-length
shoulder sling, 2 7mmx5m Prussic cords, 1 7mmx1.5m prussic
cord and a lunch/drink
Recommended Items to Bring:
Warm clothes (expect to stand around and listen/learn) and then
participate.
Notes:
This trip will be a first-come-first-serve and this is based on who
can deliver their $275 cheque/cash/INTERAC e-Transfer (to ACC
Calgary) first. Your payment options are as follows:
Send cash or cheque(s) in an envelope (make your cheque(s) out to
the "Alpine Club of Canada - Calgary Section") and mail to:
Nick St-Georges
134 Everglen Cres. SW
Calgary, AB.
T2Y 0G5
Or, send an INTERAC e-Transfer to the ACC Treasurer using the
Treasurer@ACCCalgary.ca email address.
Cancellation/Partial Attendance: Please review our participant responsibility guidelines!
Cancellation Policy:
Courses are offered at a discounted rate based on a 1:6 ration of
instructor to student (40% discount from standard rates). Due to
the popularity of these clinics, full payment must be received to
book your spot. There will be no refund for cancellations. Courses
will run regardless of weather unless the guide deems conditions
unsafe then either a back-up option will be executed (i.e. rock
rescue in the climbing gym if torrential rain) or an appropriate date
will be rescheduled. This is to be decided by the guide the evening
before.
*Cancellation Policy*: If a participant is unable to attend a paid course or trip, there will be no refund unless the participant finds a suitable replacement that is acceptable to the trip coordinator. Acceptable waiting list candidates will have priority. It will then be the participant's responsibility to recover funds from the replacement. If the coordinator cancels an event, participants get a refund (less any non-recoverable costs). Note that ACC National does not refund hut fees due to weather, delay, closures, or any other reasons. The Calgary Section of the ACC is a not for profit club and we only charge attendees what it costs us to provide courses or trips.
